Study Guide for Examination #1
(Tuesday, September 18)
The exam will consist of two sections:
(1) short identifications;
(2) commentaries on specific passages from the plays we have read.
[There will be choices in each section of the exam]
Part I, Short Identifications: you will be asked to identify the items listed with an informative sentence or two. Where relevant, give (approximate) dates. You may choose any 8 of 12 items. [ca. 25% of total exam points]
Part II, Commentary: you will be asked to comment on selected passages with a carefully organized short answer/short essay. The directions will read as follows:
(a) identify the playwright and play from which the passage is taken;
(b) identify the speaker(s) of the passage;
(c) briefly describe the context of the play in which the passage occurs;
(d) comment on the broader significance of the passage in light of the play’s themes, its characters, its comic or dramatic techniques, its social, historical or literary aspects, etc.
You may choose any 6 of 9 passages [ca. 75% of total exam points]
**PLEASE BRING A BLUEBOOK TO THE EXAM** (one that is blank/has no writing in it; exam booklets with torn/removed pages will not be accepted)
