Classics 351
Spring 2022
Performance of Scenes

ABOVE: Scene from a play of Menander

Some General Guidelines:

(1) you may read from a text/script, i.e. you are not required to memorize your lines;

(2) please do not read in a perfunctory or monotone manner, as if merely to meet the course requirement with minimal effort; you are part of performance and must put something of yourself into your character/lines;

(3) to be able to perform—and not merely to read lines (see (2) immediately above)—you must know your character, the situation, and the play;

(4) you are encouraged to use costumes, props, music, and any other effects you think will enhance your performance;

(5) you may alter some of the language of the translations we are using and make additions to the translation for the sake of your CLAS 351 audience; don't edit too much material out, however, as the chosen scenes are short and tight as they are;

(6) be creative, be interpretative!

Please Note the Following:

(1) your two performances account for 5% of the course grade;

(2) the individual fortunes of your acting troupe rise or fall togther: group members receive the same grade (unless someone does not participate/perform);

(3) you are not being graded on your collective acting talents and experience, but what you put into the performance in terms of preparation, thought, and energy.
