LAT 430/530
Fall 2024
Performance of Scenes

Each of you is required to perform/read through a scene from one of the plays we are reading this semester (I'll suggest some scenes as the semester proceeds). You may perform your scene in Latin or English (or you may code-switch).

General Guidelines

(1) you may read from a text/script (if you make use of a published translation, acknowledge it), i.e. you are not required to memorize your lines;

(2) please do not read in a perfunctory or monotone manner, as if merely to meet the course requirement with minimal effort; you are part of performance and must put something of yourself into your character/lines;

(3) to be able to perform—and not merely to read lines (see (2) immediately above)—you must know your character, the situation, and the play;

(4) you are encouraged to use costumes, props, music, and any other effects you think will enhance your performance;

(5) be creative, be interpretative!

(6) you will not be graded on your individual or collective acting talents and experience, but what you put into the performance in terms of preparation, thought, and energy.
